Embroidery Thread Guide for Nigerian Fabrics

Use polyester thread (Madeira Polyneon, Gunold Sulky) for most Nigerian commercial work — it resists humidity, bleach, and frequent washing better than rayon. Match needle size to thread weight (40 wt standard), use proper backing on stretch fabrics, and store thread sealed away from dust and moisture.

Thread Types and When to Use Them

Polyester embroidery thread is the default for caps, polos, uniforms, and workwear in Nigeria's humid climate. It maintains colour through laundry and resists breakage on high-speed runs. Rayon offers a softer sheen for fashion applications but fades and weakens with washing — use it selectively on display garments, not daily corporate wear.

Standard 40-weight thread pairs with DBxK5 #75/11 or #80/12 needles for most cotton and polyester fabrics. Thick canvas or caps may need #90/14. Metallic and specialty threads require slower speeds and frequent needle changes — price these jobs higher to cover breakage and time.

Embroidery Chief stocks compatible thread systems for machines sold at our branches and advises on colour matching for corporate brand guidelines using Madeira and Gunold charts.

    Fabric-Specific Tips for Nigeria

Cotton polos and tees need cutaway backing to prevent stretch distortion during stitching. Structured caps require cap frames, proper centering, and often tearaway backing on the inside. Agbada and loose-weave traditional fabrics may need adhesive backing and reduced stitch density to avoid puckering.

Store cones in closed bins with silica gel in rainy season. Dust on thread causes skipped stitches — wipe machine paths weekly. Buy thread from authorized suppliers to avoid counterfeit cones that break tension calibration.

Test every new fabric combination with a sew-out sample before client production. The cost of one test swatch is negligible compared to remaking 100 branded shirts for a Lagos corporate client.
